Ok, so you want to start an online store and have no idea where to start? Well, you have started in the right way with a lot of research and the more research you can do the better. You will need products for your online store so try and choose products first before developing a website to fit the products as I will explain next.

Build Ecommerce Around Your Products

When you are choosing your products think about what kind of site or theme you can work in around them. This can be pretty much anything and I personally own and run a site called Beautiful Beachesthat sells swimwear. While this site was setup as a beach site first it is the kind of website that it is easy to choose ranges of stock to fit it.

So either choose a product that is easy to market or create a website with a specific theme. Remember, if it is too broad then you will not be able to compete effectively. Being a small fish on the internet means choosing a particular niche and sticking with it.

Checking Online Wholesalers

There are a lot of online wholesalers and just like finding one in your local area, you want to be able to rely on them. Make some sample orders etc so that you can test delivery time and reliability, and of course the all important quality. If you are after generic type goods then online wholesalers like Alibaba are good to deal with.

Beware though, not all online ‘sellers’ actually sell anything so keep an eye out for any potential scams. A good rule of thumb is if it seems to good to be true then it is!

Stock Versus Drop Shipping

Once you have decided on a product and found a wholesaler you will also want to consider how you will be delivering to customers. Drop shipping has become increasingly popular as you will not have to store any goods and shipment can sometimes be quicker. Keep in mind though that you will be relying on another business to fulfill your order quickly.

Keeping stock means that you can have a good idea of what specials to run as well as what sells and what does not. it also affords you the opportunity to sell through other avenues such as markets and ebay.

I hope this has helped you in your step to starting your own online store and I hope you check out some of our other online business ideas!
